Open markets are one of the most definitive cultural norms of South-East Asia, and if you’re in Thailand there are many markets to choose from, but if you’re in Si Kao, check out the Maharaj Market.

Opening and Closing Times

This is mostly a morning market, so it opens very early, around 3 am. It starts winding down towards 10am and is then closed shortly afterwards. The best time to visit the market is around 7-8 am. If you’re in one of the Krabi resorts in the area such as Anantara Si Kao Resort, be sure to visit the market before breakfast.

Fruits and Vegetables

There’s a smorgasbord of fruits and vegetables to be found here and some of them are bound to fascinate you. The various stalls will contain items ranging from neon-coloured chillies, to piles of herbs and spices such as turmeric to coconuts and pineapples.

 Surf and Turf

Krabi is situated at the mouth of the Krabi River so the markets are lush with a variety of seafood. You will find all sorts of favourites such as tuna and crab, and even some truly intriguing creatures you will not even know the names for.

A Foodie’s Haven

If you love all things food and would like to experience the finest in local cuisine, then you won’t be disappointed. You will discover freshly prepared dishes encompassing spicy beef and rice, to exquisite soups to delicious desserts such as Fuktong Sangkaya.
