For those who want a break from the traditional, Abu Dhabi’s modern malls hold their own. Yas Mall on Yas Island — the city’s largest — offers over 370 stores alongside a 20-screen cinema and an indoor theme park. Marina Mall on the Corniche combines high-end and accessible brands with an observation tower offering panoramic views of the city, before heading towards an Abu Dhabi beach resort of the likes of Anantara Retreat Santorini Abu Dhabi.

For something to take home that won’t fit in your carry-on, the Carpet Souk is worth a long look, with traditional and contemporary designs ranging from accessible to genuinely investment-worthy. Smaller but no less meaningful finds include custom-blended oud perfumes, handcrafted dallah coffee pots, locally produced dates in every variety imaginable, and traditional kohl and henna products.
