Macau was the first European colony in Asia, and until the end of 1999 it was still an overseas territory of Portugal, thus making it Asia’s last European colony as well. The colonial influence is clearly visible and permeates every aspect of the city’s architecture. In fact, remove the Chinese signage from the streets and it would be hard to distinguish Macau from a typical European city. Separated from Hong Kong by the Pearl River, it is fast becoming one of the biggest tourist stops in the Orient, gaining renown for its charming cityscape, glitzy casinos and duty free shopping.

The fact that Macau is probably the largest gambling destination in Asia, should give some sort of indication as to the shopping opportunities available here. Tourists will find plenty of high-end stores selling all sorts of luxury goods. However, since the entire island is duty free, goods can be bought at comparatively low prices. Most of the modern malls and shopping complexes are found in Downtown Macau, where tourists can purchase famous designer brands from all over the world. While those with a taste for adventure and a love of antiques and similar goods, can explore the back alleys of Downtown Macau for hidden treasures.

The Outer Harbour area also offers similar shopping opportunities to the Downtown region. The Fisherman’s Wharf, containing over 150 stores; the New Yaohan, Macau’s largest department store; and the Wine Museum, with over 300 kinds of wine, are all located in the area. The Inner Harbour shopping experience, on the other hand, is very different to the one in the Outer Harbour and Downtown. Catering mostly to the locals, one can find a myriad of day to day goods, such as groceries and household items. To buy local handicrafts, one should head to Taipa Island, where local artwork, jewellery and other crafts are sold. Coloane Island is another place where one can find high quality locally produced goods.

Like the city’s malls which offer the best of shopping, Macau hotels offer the best of accommodation. Luxury hotels Macau, such as the opulent Galaxy Macau Resort Hotel, are geared towards taking care of their guests, and providing them with a stay to remember.
