Lying beside Honk Kong and Macau, Guangzhou has slowly blossomed into a shopaholic’s paradise. A city which was at one time almost hidden to the world has now a thriving commercial life. Take any Guangzhou street and you will feel the vibe of an authentic city. This city’s popularity with the tourists has given rise to several Guangzhou luxury apartments. But despite the choices, the Ascott Guangzhou is a popular favorite since it is located in close proximity to the first and most prominent commercial street in the city; the Shangxiajiu Pedestrian Street.

The Shangxiajiu Pedestrian Street is located in the Liwan district and spans across 1200 meters. It is by far the biggest and most influential attractions in the city and not a tourist visits Guangzhou without walking down the Shangxiajiu Pedestrian Street. This street depicts strongly the roots of Guangzhou as the many buildings and structures lining either side of the street portray Qi Lou style of architecture which strongly reflects the Lignan culture. There are however a couple of buildings that are created in a typical European style as well. The street boasts over 300 different stores some of which have a rich and stable history. The Guangzhou garment store is a good example of a store that has lasted several decades. The Herring Shoes, The Hats Store, the Dalu clock and the Watch store are all age old shops that still maintain their good name and reputation.

The Shangxiajiu Pedestrian Street was first opened in September 1995 and now almost 2 decades later it has maintained its place as the most thriving commercial street in the city. In addition to the wholesome shopping experience that you can enjoy at the Shangxiajiu Pedestrian Street, there are plenty of excellent eateries here. The Wenchang Chicken, Onion Chicken, Guangzhou Restaurant and the Taotaoju Restaurant are among the most popular names of restaurants found here.
